16 02 2007

sony-ericsson-w880i-combo.jpgThe Sony Ericsson W880i is an ultra-slim and exceptionally light 3G phone at just 9.5mm thick and an astonishing 72 grams in weight. The light weight is more surprising given that the W880i has a stainless steel finish.

Samsung F700 (SGH-F700 / Ultra Smart F700)

samsung-f700-2.jpg

The Samsung F700 will be officially announced at next week’s 3GSM World Congress, but Samsung have given us a brief glimpse of the specifications of this upcoming device in advance. It’s an HSDPA capable 3.5G smartphone, with download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps (where supported), plus UMTS (3G), EDGE and GPRS, but the Samsung F700 does not appear to support WiFi.

The SGH-F700’s landscape/portrait mode and slide-out QWERTY keyboard are reminiscent of HTC devices such as the TyTN, but it is quite rare to see other manufacturers with this type of form factor. The Samsung F700 has a 2.8″ 440×240 pixel display which is slightly better than most competing smartphones which have just 320×240 pixels. However, it still can’t compete with the 800×480 pixel display in the Nokia N800. The screen is touch-sensitive, which explains the lack of external controls (apart from the keyboard, of course).

Nokia E90 Communicator

16 02 2007

nokia-e90-front.jpg

The Nokia E90 Communicator is the latest in a long line of communicator devices, and is the replacement for the Nokia 9500 which was announced three years ago.  To say that the E90 is “long awaited” would be an understatement. One of the weaknesses of the 9500 and the 9300 and 9300i devices derived from it was a lack of 3G support, and the E90 now adds that. But it’s more that just a port of the old Communicator platform to 3G, the Nokia E90 also adds a GPS receiver and integrated navigation application, a 3.2 megapixel camera, FM radio and a significantly improved screen. As with the 9500, the Nokia E90 retains WiFi support and has a full QWERTY keyboard (although the keyboard has been improved in the E90).

The Communicator series of devices have always had the unfortunate nickname of “the brick”, and the Nokia E90 continues in that tradition. At a hefty 210 grams, the E90 is actually 20 grams lighter than the 9500, but 38 grams heavier than the 9300i. Nokia have done a remarkable job with size though – when viewed from the front (see left), the E90 is about the height and thickness of the compact 9300/9300i while retaining the same width as the 9500 at 132 x 57 x 20mm.

Motorola RIZR Z8

16 02 2007

It is a pretty interesting device (if you can get past the “oh no not again” RAZR styling). The RIZR Z8 is a 3G Symbian smartphone with HSDPA (up to 3.6Mbit/sec), 90Mb of internal memory expandable to 4GB using microSD cards, a 2 megapixel primary camera and an impressive maximum talktime of 5 hours while on 3G.

There’s a comprehensive multimedia player and stereo Bluetooth support. Motorola’s press department chose to illustrate the RIZR Z8’s multimedia capabilities by slapping on a picture of Johnny Depp for some reason.

Samsung’s S-SIM now supports MMC and dual-USB support

16 02 2007

samsung_1gb_s-sim.jpg

We’ve been waiting for that super-chip that combines, you know, all the things we need in a mobile — SIM, phone memory and USB 2.0 support. Samsung’s new-n-improved SIMs will now support the MultiMediaCard format (MMC) as well as the USB 2.0 and InterChip-USB interfaces for mobiles. The dual standard is to give handset makers flexibility in the transition as they decide which USB interface will make the grade. The S-SIM — as it’s been called — auto-configures based on what it detects in the handset. We really do fancy that newest SIM with

LG’s KE850 PRADA

16 02 2007

t-dmb-lg-prada.jpg

Check it Apple, LG just went official with their iPhone look-a-like LG KE850 Prada phone which they proudly tout as the world’s “first completely touch screen mobile phone.” Er, unless you consider the ones from Motorola, HTC, and others. Still, this is more than likely a dig at the iPhone which they can rightly make since the KE850 will hit select mobile shops and PRADA stores in the UK, France, Germany and Italy at the end of February and parts of Asia before March is through. Sadly, the KE850 is a non starter for the US market since this version is limited to tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 with EDGE data. It’s smaller than its fruity peer at just 98.8 x 54 x 12-mm resulting in a more compact, 3.0-inch display presumably with that 240 x 400 resolution we heard about earlier. In case you’re keeping track (and we know you are), the iPhone goes quad-band GSM with EDGE and WiFi in a 115 x 61 x 11.6-mm shell sporting a 3.5-inch, 320 x 480 display. Also, the KE850 seems to lack any significant on-board storage opting instead for microSD to boost capacity. Like the iPhone, it packs a 2 megapixel camera (with Schneider-Kreuznach lens and LED flash) and Bluetooth 2.0. However, there’s no mention of multi-touch capabilities, an on-screen keyboard, or the accelerometer and proximity sensors found on the iPhone.
